Happy Year of the Red Fire Monkey! 2016

Welcome in the
Year of the Red Fire Monkey,
commencing this year on
the New Moon of February,
this February 8th!

This is going to be a much different kind of year than the Year of the Green Wood Sheep that we are saying our farewells to. With this past Year of the Sheep, we had an energetic directive towards practicality and rootedness, on substance and foundation. Focus was definitely on ways to find balance, and we were given many opportunities to get stripped down to the bare bones on things and discover what it is in our lives and environments that support our foundations, our security in many forms, our sense of authenticity, and our true purpose. Very Sheepy elements, mind you.

So to follow this with the the Year of the Monkey- and the Red Fire Monkey, at that- is going to often feel like we've gotten out of bed to suddenly find ourselves in some John Waters-esque carnival landscape of unpredictable commotion and consequence. A total gyroscope. Like Dorothy stepping out into the technicolor Oz suddenly surrounded by wackety wacks. But it's a rich, ripe field for finding out what areas still need work. Or in keeping with the carnival theme, a House of Mirrors that can give us a chance to practice our skills while moving through moments of illusion and mass confusion. For things are so very often not what they seem in Monkey years. Monkeys are tricksters, make no mistake. But tricksters break it down where it needs to be broken, and offer wisdom and rebirth energy as the blessings. Try to avoid fooling yourself or dancing with denial in these years- this kind of thing is not favored by the trickster Monkey.  Monkey years are also often hard lesson years for the gullible and too-trusting, and could result in deception, theft, and losses, or in very painful experiences- some absolutely humiliating.

But hey, the upside of all of this is that Monkey years are also definitely not boring ones, and often bring lots (scratch that- make that LOADS) of opportunities to shake things up and have some fun. Monkey years embody capriciousness in a huge, huge way. And so Monkey years remind us, often uncomfortably, that to make solid plans is so very often futile- and that the best way to go down a rushing river of unpredictable commotion is to just flow with it. It can be exhausting during Monkey years to struggle against the big force- focusing rather on our individual personal choices to *try* and determine our direction in the middle of this big energy may prove to be the better course of action.
And try to be open to letting your hair down.  Monkey Years are like huge house parties where everything is happening at once- little bursty supernovas all over- and as it can be with big wild house parties, sometimes there's celebration and sometimes there's calamity.
You really just have no way of truly knowing what's just around the corner at this party!

In terms of finances and business, Monkey years can be highly unpredictable. To the point of roulette wheel status often. For some it will be incredibly lucky- luck is a strong element in Monkey years. For some, not so much- but the biggest allies for courting good fortune in Monkey years are qualities belonging to the Monkey itself: inventiveness, creativity, skill, cleverness, originality, independence, intelligence, enthusiasm, and a huge sense of humor. Mad skills in adaptability will also take one a long way in making the most of this year with flying colors. Monkey years in business favor those who take risks, brilliant impulses-
but try not to be too rash. Fortune may favor the bold, but not necessarily the rashly brash.

Politically, Monkey years continue the theme of the previous year in that we still are witnessing a suddenly very interesting and unpredictable political climate, one that will continue being strongly influenced by the highlights on values and social justice from the previous Sheep year.
However, there is a higher risk for political and social calamity than we've had in the previous year. Political parties that are weakened from within may experience further and deeper process of breakdown and division, because in Monkey years the individuality of politicians is usually more prominent than the core values of the overall party. Things can also break down in communication between governing forces and political parties- for as the monkey is so fond of doing, there may be the human equivalent of screaming and throwing lots of poo around. It could be quite a sight ( in the United States, for example- with what is absolutely going to be a historic and quite unusual election year this year). American election years due to their 4 year cycle often fall in Monkey years- and we can look back to the previous Monkey election years of 1992, 1980, and 1968 to see the bigger scope of how the politics of Monkey years can be filled with truly huge changes, often driven by the core Monkey elements of big personalities, tricksters, risk-takers and change-makers. Huge changes which are often made even more flammable because of the focus on social justice issues during the previous Sheep year.

To close out with a concept that is true to Monkey form- this is a year that strongly favors uninhibition. It is a great year to express oneself as freely and authentically as one can-
and the freer and truer you are to yourself, the better. I suddenly had that Cat Stevens song from the absolutely wonderful 1971 cult classic 'Harold and Maude' pop into my head:

'Well, if you want to sing out, sing out
And if you want to be free, be free
'Cause there's a million things to be
You know that there are

And if you want to live high, live high
And if you want to live low, live low
'Cause there's a million ways to go
You know that there are

You can do what you want
The opportunity's on
And if you can find a new way
You can do it today
You can make it all true
And you can make it undo
you see ah ah ah
its easy ah ah ah
You only need to know

Well if you want to say yes, say yes
And if you want to say no, say no
'Cause there's a million ways to go
You know that there are

And if you want to be me, be me
And if you want to be you, be you
'Cause there's a million things to do
You know that there are
You know that there are
You know that there are.'

That's about the best advice for Monkey years that can be given, methinks!
