The Dance of the Seven Veils is symbolic of the Descent of Ishtar into the Underworld. At each level of descent, Ishtar had to make a sacrifice of one of her seven objects of power, being stripped level by level so that when She arrived in the Underworld, She was naked of ego, bereft of illusion. Only through this release was Ishtar able to enter the Realm of the Dead- the womb of the Underworld- to be reborn.
In Vedanta Hinduism, the aim is to pierce the “Veil of Maya (Illusion)” to attain transcendental truth. The seeker who finally sees is thus reborn into the higher bliss of pure wisdom.
